Calling out Instagram Censorship of LGBTQ+ Content for Teen Users
Accountable Tech partnered with GLAAD after Taylor Lorenz’s reporting revealed Instagram was censoring LGBTQ+ content and hashtags for teens using the “sensitive content” filter. This filter is enabled by default for users aged 13-17, limiting "sexually suggestive content" and requiring parental intervention to change settings.
After reading the article, I reached out to Jenni Olson, Senior Director of GLAAD’s Social Media Safety Program, to propose a collaboration on a digital product that would break down the report, especially in light of Meta's history of endangering marginalized users. With GLAAD’s 440k Instagram followers, we could reach a broad audience through a joint post appearing on both accounts' feeds.
I drafted and edited copy for each frame, focusing on brevity and readability. The post told a compelling story: highlighting the conflict in the research, key figures like Leanna Garfield (GLAAD's Social Media Safety Program Manager), and Meta’s response, with a call to action. I worked across time zones to manage approvals between both organizations, leading to a successful publication and an increase of 200 followers for Accountable Tech.
